At the Building the Broadband Economy Conference that took place in New York in the evening of the 16th May the Intelligent Community Awards were given to the world’s top seven communities, for the second time in a row Tallinn was also among them.
According to Toomas Sepp, Tallinn City Secretary who is currently in New York, the highest award was given to the Gangam District of Seoul with 560 000 people from which we can all learn a lot. According to them, the success has been based on the City Government's active role, the creation of conditions for active involvement of population and considering their feedback, the establishment of necessary IT infrastructure and the continuous development of infrastructure.
"Tallinn was given one of three special awards with which the cooperation of the city and the state was acknowledged for the establishment of a safe E-services environment and for the development of specific operational applications," noted Sepp. "The implementation of E-school application at all Tallinn schools, the large-scale spread of m-parking and the success story of ID ticket was especially emphasized. Several US cities are already seriously interested in the m-parking application where corresponding preparations are in progress," added Sepp.
According to Mayor Edgar Savisaar, the nomination of Tallinn once again among the world's top seven intelligent communities is very notable for all of us. "Such an acknowledgement shows the innovativeness of city dwellers and openness and fast adoption of new solutions. If one city achieves such an acknowledgement once, this may be considered a chance, however, if this happens for the second time, this is already a regularity showing that Tallinn is very highly esteemed in the world. I congratulate the people of Tallinn and all our supporters for such a success," added Savisaar.
The majority of this year's nominees were included among the world's top intelligent communities already for the second time. Tallinn was also on the list for the second time, the nomination was substantiated by highly developed E-systems. Among other things, more than 600 public Internet access points, successful e-government programmes and the most high-level ID card based public services in Europe were acknowledged.
In addition to the winner Gangnam and already mentioned Tallinn, Dundee (Scotland), Frederiction (Canada), Northeast Ohio (USA), Westchester in New York (USA) and Winston-Salem (USA) also belong among the top intelligent communities. |
